Today, June 18th, we pause to commemorate Waterloo Day โ€“ a date etched forever in military history! ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งWe proudly remember the immense courage and sacrifice of all who fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. For the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, this day holds special significance, as two of our direct antecedent regiments were there: ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire: This distinguished regiment’s forebear, the 14th Regiment of Foot, was present at Waterloo with its 3rd Battalion. This battalion, uniquely formed from militia volunteers, demonstrated incredible steadfastness, holding their ground and contributing significantly to the Allied victory despite their relatively less extensive regular army experience. Their resolve embodies the Yorkshire spirit. ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding): Originating from the brave 33rd Regiment of Foot, this regiment fought with immense distinction at Waterloo. Known affectionately as “The Havercake Lads,” they were central to repelling numerous French attacks under heavy fire, proving their mettle and dedication throughout the day. Their resilience forged a formidable reputation. The legacy of these brave Yorkshiremen โ€“ their determination, and their unwavering sense of duty โ€“ continues to inspire every soldier in the Royal Yorkshire Regiment today. We stand on the shoulders of giants. Lest we forget. #WaterlooDay #BattleOfWaterloo #RoyalYorkshireRegiment #YorkshireProud #MilitaryHistory #BritishArmy #PrinceOfWalesOwn #DukeOfWellingtonsRegiment #History #OnThisDay
